AI Homeroom: Keeping the Human Touch in AI-Powered Learning

The world of education is changing fast, with AI (artificial intelligence) becoming a bigger part of how we teach and learn. AI has the potential to do some amazing things, like creating lessons that are just right for each student, making teachers' lives easier, and coming up with new ways to make learning fun and effective. But it's also really important to think about the right way to use AI, so it helps people instead of causing problems.

At Eggs Benedict Tech LLC, we believe that even with all this cool technology, people – teachers, students, parents, and school leaders – need to stay at the center of the educational focus. We call this "Human in the Loop," and it's the core ethical idea behind everything we're doing with AI Homeroom.

In this figure, we center teaching and learning in all considerations about the suitability of an AI model for an educational use. Humans remain in the loop of defining, refining, and using AI models. We highlight the six desirable characteristics of AI models for education (elaborating from principles in the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights to fit the specifics of educational systems). Office of Educational Technology (2023).

Think of it this way: AI is a powerful tool, but it's the people who know best about what students need and how they learn. That's why we're building AI Homeroom with a lot of guidance from the U.S. Department of Education. Their Office of Educational Technology put out a report (AI in Education, 2023) that gives really important advice about how we should be using AI in schools. One of their biggest points is that we should always "Emphasize Humans in the Loop," and that's exactly what we're doing with AI Homeroom.

Here's how we're making sure people are always in the loop:

  • Based on Real-World Needs: The lessons and activities provided through the chatbots in AI Homeroom are based on what states and the federal government say kids need to learn. The material and standards are all driven from the metrics set by schools – it's all tied to what's already happening in classrooms.

  • Teachers First: We believe technology should make teachers' jobs easier and help them connect with their students. AI Homeroom is designed to be a tool that teachers can use to support their students through extra AI-powered tutoring, not something that replaces the teacher. We want to make sure technology is used in a kind, respectful, and responsible way.

  • Everyone Has a Voice: We have been listening to and want to hear more from teachers, students, parents, and school leaders when we're designing AI Homeroom. Their ideas and feedback are super important to us, because they're the ones who will be using it, learning through it, and having it effect their lives.

  • Making Teachers' Lives Easier: One of our main goals with AI Homeroom is to give teachers easy-to-use, fun learning materials that fit right into what they're already teaching. We want to help teachers spend more time doing what they do best: working with students.

Teachers, students, and families are all important to keep in "the loop" of EdTech development.

As we keep working on AI Homeroom, we'll keep you updated on how we're making sure it's used in an ethical and safe way for our students. We're excited to show everyone how AI can make education easier by providing tech tools, but we're even more excited to do it in a way that puts people first and makes a positive difference in the world.

Stay bright,

eggs
